Winter always means potholes but do you think this winter's snow and extreme cold will mean more trouble than usual? WBFO's Cheryl Hagen checked in with Erie County about the situation... Erie County Department of Public Works Director of Engineering Charlie Sickler says the steady cold weather has not been good for road surfaces. He notes we have not seen the freeze - thaw cycle that typically creates issues, but says the weather will still mean problems for roads from Harris Hill in Clarence to Lake Road in Hamburg.

The first phase of a plan to redevelop a one-mile stretch of Seneca Street is being launched as local leaders aim to make the long-neglected commercial strip a "small downtown." Some University at Buffalo students will spend the next few months examining strategies to make the street near Cazenovia Park more pedestrian-friendly and attractive to businesses.

Erie Community College is preparing a SUNY 2020 Challenge Grant that would pave the way for a new workforce training center in a proposed East Side development park. The Regional Workforce Training Center will already be supported by one source of state funds, the Buffalo Billion allocation.

With Buffalo seeking a grocery store to help anchor a proposed Ellicott Street development, the region's largest supermarket chain said it might be interested, but only under the right conditions.

A failing school is any school in the bottom 5 percent of schools statewide based on combined ELA and math scores, that have not showed progress in test performance, or that have had graduation rates below 60 percent for the last three years. In all, there are 178 such schools in New York.

Across the Rochester-Buffalo region, girls ranging in age from kindergarten through high school sell cookies to raise funds for their individual troops and to support the Girl Scouts of Western New York. Trucks filled with 1.5 million boxes of Thin Mints, Caramel DeLites and other cookies will arrive at central distribution points Friday and Saturday to distribute cases of cookies to individual troops.
